The Video Game Conflict: Battle of the Generations?

We are the generation of technology. Throughout our lives communication, media, and entertainment have evolved at such a rapid pace, that many people are having trouble adjusting to them. One controversial topic is Video games. Video games to me are a fun way to entertain and communicate with the world, as well as learn new and useful skills. It has so many benefits and merits that the larger media tends to avoid. The general public, especially the older generation, tends to focus only on the evils it has caused. They have condemned video games as a dangerous pastime, which target the youth into sin, greed, and lust.

Many of today’s youth can probably relate to this conflict, especially when one goes to buy video games. These people, who don’t want children to play games because of the little shreds of news media, look down on the parents or adults who do let these children play the game. The main conflict on video games is “dose it causes problems in children” and because of this there is constant friction. The point of view is so diverse because it’s not only based off of factual information, but the age gap has caused many problems due to the fact that it’s so foreign to them. However, the children as well as the parents aren’t the only people who have a stake on this outcome.

Some common fighters so to speak are the dating industry, game companies, sponsors, gamers, and families. The reason there is such a diverse spectrum of stockholders is because of the many genre such as FPS, MMORPGs, RPG, sports, simulations, etc. The reason these fighters hold a share is dating industry is losing potential singles, due to many people getting together through games, like MMORPG, whereas the gaming companies and sponsors want to make the newest fad. Gamers and families have conflicting ideas on how much game time is okay. Of course this issue is never clear cut and a lot of people blow their own ideas out of proposing, and condemn everything even if it only covers such a small portion of video games. One small fix that the gaming industry introduced is the game rating system. Though there are still a lot of problems in general. So the fight still goes on. We the generation of technology have respect for the old games, such as pong, whereas the older generation fear technology and resist change and the younger generation, is born into games such as MW2 and Halo: Reach. We are all different.
