Problems with the Education System

Throughout high school, myself and other students alike, found that many of the rules imposed in schools are petty and more for the school to make money off detentions than anything else. These rules caused more distraction and stress for students than anything else and ultimately distracted from the learning environment. As cliché as it sounds, students go to high school to learn and move on in their lives. In many cases, the school board is so caught up in attempts to raise test scores or make their school seem more appealing many students fall behind in the fields that will do them the most good in life and/or college. In a local high school, there are not enough books or chairs for the entire class, yet the football team received new uniforms (thank you taxpayers!) The public school district I live in has a compromised honors program and those students are not challenged in the ways that they need to be. Some of these issues have been going on for decades and every group of people have different feelings about what needs to be done in order to save failing schools. Administrators have been out of the classroom for too long to realize what important school values are. Parents are paying for all of this but are usually left out of the discussion seen as there children are taught to deal with their own problems and not to rely on their parents to bail them out. Although many teachers may want to develop relationships with their students and individually help those falling behind, teachers are not paid on a scale and do not have much motivation to go above and beyond the requirements of their jobs. The Archdiocese of Seattle that sponsors the high school I went to, had their own set of rules (prayer before every class everyday, weekly rosaries, etc.) that my school complied with in order to receive funding. In today’s education situation, the schools are being governed by what gives them the most money, rather than what is best for the education of students.
