Analytical Hypertext-Obesity in America

Thinking of our great nation, which is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but

shouldn’t we be the healthiest as well? The Statistics have shown ever since obesity has

been observed as a threat to Americans in 1986 the numbers keep growing like a plague

sweeping the nation. Now the leading cause of death in Americans today is heart disease

which is caused by some clumped artery or vein in the heart muscle which is then caused

by a poor diet and lack of exercise.

According to center of disease control and prevention in the better half of the southern

states such as Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi 30 percent of the adults living in these

states are classified as obese. In recent years there have been many lawsuits against fast

food restaurants such as McDonalds over the fact that it’s making people obese and the risk

of an individual from dying dramatically increases. In general when looking at the people

who eat this food daily or consistently the vast majority are African American men and

women or Mexican-American men and women. The biggest reason that they eat this high

calorie food is the fact that the prices at these restaurants are so cheap and affordable with

simply just a great taste. With the struggling economy people who have been laid off from

work now rely on the high calorie, cheap diet from fast food restaurants for breakfast,

lunch, and dinner. The other problem is not just the fast food restaurants but if you look at

a typical street in America today there is food all around you. There are Donut shops,

Starbucks, snacks in every office, and candy shops everywhere! Kids are starting to be

more addicted to the computer, or any of the gaming consoles and not venture outside and

play a sport. With the gaming industry expanding rapidly it will be a difficult challenge to

get kids out of the house and outside to adventure new beginnings. In the Southern States

such as Louisiana the culture in this states calls for high concentrations of fat in the diet

because of the way they live. One food that is very common, traditional breakfast item in

New Orleans is a Beignet that is a French donuts deep-fried is oil and covered in powdered

sugar. This item contains about 550 calories and 17.7 grams of total fat that may not seem a

lot but usually people eat five or six or these pastries. With all this said America has not

given up fighting the obesity challenge at hand. As a media outlet there is now a Television

series called the “Biggest Loser” which is about a dozen or so people trying to lose a

significant amount of weight is trying to send a message to Americans that they to can shed

there weight and live out there lives medication free.
