ANALYTICAL HYPERTEXT-ANIMAL ABUSE

Lives of innocent animals are jeopardized every day due to physical and other forms of abuse from human beings. Circus elephants are chained for up to 23 hours a day, from the time they were babies. Fifty-five minks are killed to make a single mink coat. Exotic animals, such as circus lions and monkeys, are often exposed to physical abuse to make them learn their routines faster. Animals should be treated with the same amount of respect that humans are treated with. Just because they can’t talk, animals are no different than humans in that they are born with the same rights to life that humans are born with.

There are many different stakeholders in the issue of animal rights but the most common contrasting opinion consists of people who disagree that animals should be treated like humans and not as property. People with this mindset tend to view animals as an object, which they have complete control over. It is unfortunate but about 30% of people agree with this belief. Another stakeholder in this topic includes people who are aware of animal cruelty and the inhumanity of it. But these people also hold the belief that animal cruelty is bound to happen and that it would be too difficult to convince a significant amount of people to change their mind. This group of stakeholders probably agrees with most of the beliefs that the people against animal cruelty share. What differentiates these two groups is the amount of will power that they have to decrease the amount of animal cruelty. Non-physical abuse is also very common; dressing animals in outfits and exploiting them for human amusement is also considered animal cruelty. The pathetic people who use pet monkeys as street performers are practicing animal abuse.

It is extremely unfortunate that animals cannot voice their opinions. They are powerless and have no choice but to trust humans with their life. It is our responsibility to be that voice that animals lack and stop the abuse.
