Let Them Play

February 2, 1993.  The day will go down in history as a dark and depressing one in the eyes of Santa Clara University sports fans.  On that cold and frigid February morning, Santa Clara announced the discontinuation of football at the university, a move that stunned and saddened alumni and fans of the Bronco program.

As a freshman here at Santa Clara with a family legacy too long to list, I have been raised to love Bronco athletics.  I have countless memories as a young child attending basketball games in my miniature Steve Nash jersey.  There is even a picture my family has of me hoisted on Steve’s shoulders after a game.  I cannot describe my love for Santa Clara basketball.  However, as I was just about to turn one year old when the team was dropped, I never made any memories watching Santa Clara football, and that is something I dearly regret.

There have been countless efforts to reestablish a football team here at Santa Clara, but recently the head of the Bronco Bench foundation, Andy Schatzman, who is also a good family friend of mine, has come up with an interesting idea.  He proposes Santa Clara play a one game season each year against former rival St. Mary’s College.  Back in the day, the rivalry between Santa Clara and St. Mary’s was as heated as they come.  Now, more than 17 years after the death of the football team, that match up does not carry the same intensity in other sports.  I believe we can bring back the school spirit and competitiveness with a one game battle with those darn Gaels.

So, in conclusion, I propose a one game football season with a battle between the Santa Clara Broncos and the St. Mary’s Gaels.
