Goldman and Anarchism

Anarchism is the belief that society should have no government, laws, or authority and should be a free association of all its members. I think that Doctorow is incorporating anarchism in the book to promote it because the government in the story seems to be corrupt and takes advantage of the citizens and their rights. Therefore, it would be better if there was no government. There seems to be some parallels between the characater Marcus and Emma Goldman. Goldman was an anarchist who was active in the trade union movement and in promoting women's rights. She gave speeches and even went to jail for some of her beliefs. She fought against the government for more fairness and rights, just like Marcus is doing. Anarcho-feminism is a combination of anarchism and feminism; the belief is that the anarchist struggle against the state and the feminist struggle against patriarchy are necessary in society. I think that Doctorow introduces this because it is a belief that opposes all positions of power, which is basically Marcus's point of view. He opposes the school authorities, the police, the DHS, and the US government.
