Yippies, FSM, and Punk Rock
The Free Speech Movement as well as the Yippies could be mentioned in Little Brother because they were young students fighting against higher powers so they could retain their freedoms of speech as well as academic freedom. Marcus rises up against the DHS because they steal his rights and the reason why Marcus is so good at being able to sneak out of school is because they put those barriers up to begin with. The Yippies were a more radical branch off of the Free Speech Movement, who went as far as trying to get a pig elected for president. Punk rock is a genre of music that led to the punk subculture that bred rebellious youth that had a plethora of anti-authoritarian mentalities. All of these are mentioned in the novel Little Brother to show real life examples of people that have risen against the government, and although they did not succeed, they left a large impression on the youth of America.
