Yippies, FSM, and Punk Music
The main ideas of these three groups fit in perfectly with themes in Little Brother. The Yippies were a radical youth oriented political group. They mocked the social status quo. They had underground newspapers and meetings. Their main goal was a state of anarchy. The Free Speech Movement's (FSM) beliefs were rooted deeply in the idea that students should be allowed to discuss and participate in what they wanted to. They should not be held down by "the man". Punk music was founded on the ideas of DIY, freedom, and the idea that people should do what they want to do. These three things fit in perfectly in Little Brother. The Xnet is mainly youth, their theme "Dont trust anyone over 25" fits in perfectly with the Yippies. They mock the status quo and are an underground network themselves. They believe they should be able to do what they want, and say what they want, without being controlled and censored by "the man". These ideas are the main ideas of the Yippies, FSM and Punk music and it makes sense that Doctorow would include them in this book.
