Design Response
Peer Review
Vanessa: I really love the font generators you used in your site- having just the title in an interesting text really adds a lot to your website. Another nice design feature about your site is the fact that you have pictures on either side of the text. I would suggest playing around with how you justify the text and see if it looks as good to have it left justified. Finally, I really like that you have two different navigation bars because it makes your site very easy to navigate.
Sam: I love the cat picture.. that is a great way to open up the website I think it's very cute! Past that, I think you used photos from a wide variety of ages and musical preferences which is effective in proving your point. I might suggest displaying your picture but not tiling them because it can make some of the pages look kind of busy. The text is narrow and easy to read but making the table outline invisible would add sophistication.
Doug: I really like the pictures you use and think you used background images appropriately because the text is never hard to read. It adds interest to your site when you put pictures and text in different places on each page and I think you did that very effectively. I would suggest fixing the one picture on the "recreational users" page that does not show up and also consider adjusting the colors on the "emeral triangle" page because the red/green combo can be hard to read. I also really like that you have two navigation bars on either side of your text because it makes your site very easy to navigate.
WRITING ON SITE
Vanessa: I think your writing is very effective because you start out discussing the facts and presenting real information and then make it personal by adding your own experience and discussing why the topic is important to you. My favorite pages of your's is the military page. I like how you open up and then quickly change the tone to show how awful and judgmental "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is and then conclude with your own feelings on the issue of homosexuals in the military.
Doug: I think the writing on your site is an excellent balance between the facts, various points of view, and remaining grounded in your own opinion. You provide just the right amount of facts to supplement your point without overwhelming the viewer. Your site is very interesting because it covers more than just the obvious standpoints and I think your site was very well done.

Stuff I noticed
Just some shtuff i noticed...
Clare has an exceptional website layout. The top bar wasn't too overcrowded and each page was easily located through logical pathways. The negative aspect that grasped me was the amount of whitespaces. I found myself getting lost in the background before I could focus on the text, and even then the plain font choice and size made it difficult to concentrate on.
Nelsons site was incredibly easy to navigate, however, that was just for an overview type of investigation. I think a smaller navigation bar wouldn’t hurt, as well as possibly removing the outlines around tables. I also thought the color scheme and general layouts were very well done.
Mike had undoubtedly the most original site design. I thought it was creative as well as functional. The only thing I could see being changed was the length of the top bar. If it were just slightly smaller you would be able to see his whole screen without having to zoom out or scroll.

Wally:
-The topic is clearly stated on the splash page.
-The use of comedy pictures to show how stupid a lot of the arguments are.
-The use of a forum to let others express the ideas
-Navigation bar allows for easy access as well as well as different colors to indicate what page you are on.
-Borders were not necessary and some don't align correctly.
-Navigation bar has lots of different text styles and fonts which are good but can have negative views.
Overall a good website. Clear and straight to the point while still being funny to keep the viewer interested. Though there are some problems (mostly some layout issues) they are easy fixes which can be done fairly quickly. The content however was great as well as the fonts used. The text used truly display characteristics of each topic page. This helps set the mood or mindset the reader will be getting into.
Clare:
-The website clearly states what it is about.
-Layout is constant which helps viewers.
-There are lots of good pictures.
-It isn't cluttered.
-In some pages there is a lot of blank space that draw the eyes away from the text which can be distracting to the viewer.
Again another great website. The layout is just amazing and helps send a studious vibe. The only problem I really noticed off the back is the large amount of white space. This space draws the attention away from the text as mentioned above. However, it was a great website the design was very thoughtful and the content was great.
Jack:
The layout is clean and topic is clearly stated.
The website is focused though some pages don't have a lot of text.
Has pictures which relate to the theme.
As well as not crowded or super cluttered.
It is hard to get to some of the pages.
Also on some pages there is a lot of space that might not be a good thing.
Also another very good website. Though it is lacking in words the layout is clean and the topic is clearly conveyed across to the reader. There are some formatting issues as well as navigating issues that need to be fixed but overall a great website that is straight to the point.

Peer Assessments
Love the font on the homepage, it totally makes your sight look professional. I also love the colors that you used, very relevant to your topic and subject matter. For your links on the U.C. page, you may want to change the color of them because it was kind of difficult to find them. Also, you may wanna provide a link to go back to your home page of your analytical hypertext site. And I noticed you had the same picture of the map of CA for some of your pages, so you may want to change some of those.
Remy
I love your use of fonts, especially the use of multiple fonts on a single page. I also love your "My Pledge" page because of how open and honest you were. It was also pretty funny. Your use of colors on the Statistics page is extremely useful in that it draws my attention to the main points; however you may want to change the background color because it's a bit sore on the eyes. Also, good use of placing multiple "pages" on one page, however you may want to space it out to two or three sections per page so that it's not as crowded. Great use of pictures as well! Although some were hard to look at, they really focus on the heart of your website.
Kelli
Amazing website as usual. The colors work very well together and I love the consistency with your heading fonts. Your use of personal pictures is awesome as well and the amount of information you provided seems just right - not too long, not too short. I do agree with Mark in that it was a bit difficult to get to some of your pages. You also have a minor typo in the header of your Administration page. Other than those few things, awesome job!
*** For all three of you, you may want to fix the dimensions of your pages, especially horizontally because when viewing them at 100% in the browser, you have to use the horizontal scroll bar which is kind of tedious.
the peoples to the left of me websites
1) i really like the color scheme
2)i like the change in case in the words "I resign" but i think it would be cool if for the prop 8 words you used the prop 8 logo
3i also like how you have links to other website with similar topic
danielle Marinsk
1. you need to fix the screen so you dont have to scroll sideways
2. i really like the simplicity of the site
3. some of the background colors are distracting so keep them but then put the text with another background
Nikki Lee
1) i really like how you keep the same color scheme
2) the pictures you put up are powerful which is exactly what you want
3)make all your pages fit screen so you dont have to scroll sideways
Matt Burrill: I think you did a great job of catching the readers attention with many good pictures and color schemes. As a reader, I personally appreciate the navigation bar at the top. One thing I would change is to make the text the main focus of each pages. On some pages the text is on the side with a nice picture in the middle. Once you make that change and make some of the backgrounds less distracting you will have a perfect website! At least visually. I didn't read any of it so I'm not sure how good that part of it is.
Vanessa Casalegno: I think it was a great idea to have a consistent color theme with each page. Every page was clear and easy to read, and the navigation system is very good. I noticed some words that were underlined that were not links, so I would change that. Otherwise I can't really find any flaws, you have an awesome website!

I really like your website,. It's clean, the pictures are really good and really help prove your point. You have a way of going about talking about all different sides evenly, but your point still shows through at the end. The "Church" page is a little hard to read, it took me a little bit to realize that they were two completely seperate passages under each of the photos. Other than that though, everything looks really good. The information is clear, you include stories that make readers think, and you always stay true to your opinion. Really good :)
Ashley
Your tabs were the first thing that like really caught my eye, haha. It makes your site look super professional, as does the color scheme. Your topic is really relevant, seeing as how we're all freshman we all completely get where you're coming from. I'm not sure if you intentionally did it though, but for the UC and State Government tabs you have the same map of California for both. Good job though!
Remy
First thing I've gotta mention, the pictures on the splash page make my life. The tiny dog at the bottom... oh my god the cutest thing I've ever seen. Your site's really easy to navigate around, the pictures under the forms of abuse page are a killer though. Even though you didn't want us to read your pledge, haha, I think it adds a lot to your page. Good job
hypertext review
AJ von Massenhausen: I really love the layout of your pictures and text and how all the pages don't look exactly the same. I would suggest making the text on every page the same font so it is more unified and also making the borders on the tables disappear to give it an added touch of professionalism. Just a minor adjustment would be changing the color of the links because on some pages the purple color is a little hard to see once you've already clicked on the link.
Michael Ho: The Youtube vidoes really add interest and depth to your website and enhance the point you're trying to prove. I really like the various background images that you use because the text is easy to read, but the pages are more interesting than just a plain color. It is clear you put a lot of time into your navigation bar, font generators, and special effects on your titles. I would suggest deleting the borders on your tables as well as experimenting with different fonts to add more interest.

Three People's Websites
1) Good information, words are somewhat hard to read, maybe change the background of the text.
2) Good Pictures, they show a vivd representation of your issue.
3) Some backgrounds are distracting, they draw attention away from the text, sometimes the text is hard to focus on.

Vanessa Casalegno:
1) Cleanly organized, information is easy to attain, easy to read.
2) Good color scheme, the colors all go together well, perhaps change the link colors.
3) Easy to use navigation, simple.

What i thought about ________'s website.
Clare - I really enjoyed Clares website. It had a great design and showed that she put in alot of time especially with the pencil link bars.
Remy - I was delighted and kinda disturbed with Remys site. It had many eye catching pictures of cute animals and also had many harsh and brutal images. Other than that i thought it was a really great website
Your website is beautifully designed. You used a good amount of typography with appropraite styles and used many good pictures to represent your topic. I loved the quotes and the way you spaced out your texts from picture to picture. I was able to learn a lot about your topic without being overwhelmed with the amount of text on the page. Your "My Pledge" page is especially nicely done. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that the navigation bar was on the bottom, but that's only my opinion.
To Kelli:
I love how your website is very organized and clear. The same goes with your writing; I understood your topic from the first page and was able to understand all the pages from the stakeholders' point of view. I especially love the navigation bar because it is very easy to use. The only thing about your website is the red text on the black background. I just have a hard time looking at it because I'm blind, but other people could find it easy to read. Also having to scroll sideways is a bother.
To Jacob:
Well I didn't see the empty tables on my computer, so I thought your website was very clean and organized as well. I especially loved the slideshow on the first page. The text was also very clear in your topic and you could totally understand your point of view. The only thing I would say that bothered me was the font. Sometimes the text got overwhelming because it was so much.
peer hypertext
Brinkles...I LOVE the alternating pictures on the homepage! Way better than rollovers...you will have to show me how to do that. By including stories of family members, it allows readers to somewhat connect more to the topic.
A.J. I really like the layout of your website. It is easy to read because each page is simple, but the font and images make it interesting. That's crazy how rooted your family is in SCU. There's a lot of great info and I enjoyed reading some of the pages.
AJ's notes
1) printed and digital media have led to more browsing and scanning
2) many people prefer to read visually with pictures and diagrams than long prose
3) printing things off the internet is still in the norm
Nielsen
1) the average person reads only 20% of text on a page
2) the f pattern proves readers do not look over text throughly
jerz
1) linear authors do not need to worry about navigation
2) place navigation at top and bottom of page
3) group similar pages together
How do I know if my website sucks?
1) Our content is not broken down into logical categories.
2) We say "Welcome to..." on our home page.
3) Our site uses a splash page (unless it's a liquor, porn, gambling, adult, tobacco, or a multi-lingual / multinational site)
The 3 Websites of the People to my LEFT:)
Nikki-Great colors! They look nice and there are a lot of them. Still, they aren't overwhelming, which is good. Also, the font choices you've chose are great! Your pictures are relevant for each webpage.
Danielle - Good style and really cool graphics! Maybe a little more to fill the pages, like images or videos? IDK. ha :) You manage to convey all sides of RUSHING. You also have good links within pages.
My Website Sucks Because I committed many Sins.....
I use centered text on more than just headlines
I use terms like "Home" for navigation links
I didn't spell check
My navigation links are not at the top of the screen
The navigation system does not indicate where you are or where you are going to go
Things I learned at school today...
Liu
Flipping and scanning (a reading pattern associated with printed documents) is not only a means for locating information in a document, but also a means to get a sense of the whole text. Scrolling on a computer screen does not support this mode of reading and information processing.
People do not like to read from screens. They prefer to print out electronic documents for reading, even printouts from dot matrix printers.
I find that my patience with reading long documents is decreasing. I want to skip ahead to the end of long articles.” Another participant reports that younger people do not have patience to read every word. They merely skim and look for needed information while reading.
Nielsen
Back button is now only the 3rd most-used feature on the Web.
This dominant reading pattern looks somewhat like an F.
Web users are busy: they want to get the straight facts.
Jerz
After you've created more than about 8 pages, you should think about moving to a multi-level navigation system.
Write Meaningful Link Titles that Describe Page Relationships.
Have a stable, consistent header and footer on each page. Multiple panels and areas can be rather confusing, so beginners who use multiple panels can easily get themselves into trouble.
Does my website suck?
Our site uses a splash page (unless it's a liquor, porn, gambling, adult, tobacco, or a multi-lingual / multinational site). (Video)
Our site uses centered text on more than just headlines.
Our site doesn't physically reduce graphics using Photoshop (or other program). Instead, we take a 1200 x 800 pixel photo and manually changing the width and height attributes of the IMG tag to a smaller size.
Inspirational Hypertexts
Very straight to the point with her information; included lots of information in bullet form. Also didn't have too much text on her pages which were extremely organized.
Sarana Chan
Extremely organized and easy to read webpage. Her colors contrasted very well and each of her pages stayed still (didn't move when navigating to a new page).
Donnie Green
Professional looking site with good titles for navigation - easy to understand what page will be about.
website reflection
My webpage sucks because I use stupid terms like "home," my text is justified, and on some monitors, the reader is required to scroll horizontally.
reading notes - Wally
-The reading style has changed
-people are scanning and selective reading
-no indepth comprehension
Second Reading
-the more words the longer people read
-users read in an F shape pattern
Third Reading
-readers like special conviences link not having to have to scroll up to click a new link ( lazy ?)
-give readers options
website sucks
-doesnt make me look like a credible profession
-have not eliminated unnecassary design items
-i dont know if my site looks the same in the major browsers
-too little text
Notes for 10/20/10
1. Reading online has affected the way we read altogether--skimming, looking for key words, etc.
2. Online reading causes people to read less intently
3. However advantageous online reading may be, printed reading is still better for in-depth reading.
Nielson
1. Users when reading online never really read, they just skim.
2. Most online readers scan information in an F-shaped pattern
3. People have done experiements to see how people read when subscribing/unsubscribing to websites and when reading
Jerz
1. In order for your website to be successful, it must be easy to navigate.
2. Home links and links to other related pages are better than a back and next page
3. Consistency is key in navigation
Why does my website suck?
1. I use a splash page
2. I use justified text
3. I use cheap clip art (only sometimes!)
response to digital media articles
In Nielson's article, I found it interesting that readers will read only about 20% of the text on an average page. Also I learned that readers will view the page in a "F-shaped pattern" and that 67% of users don't read the introduction paragraph to the pages.
In Jerz's article, I learned about the "breadcrumb trail" and I would like to incorporate this type of navigation bar in my next hypertext. The breadcrumb trail allows the reader to follow the links that they have visited. I also learned that readers prefer to have navigation bars at the bottom or top of the page.
3 mortal sings that I committed:
1. visited links don't change color
2. navigation bar isn't at the top of the page
3. my homepage says "welcome to..."
Main Themes taken from Readings
The Liu article stated the many pros and cons of printed media and digital media. It also discusses the techniques used while reading these two types of media. It backed up ideas and opinions with statistics taken from multiple surveys, and conveyed to the reader that printed media and digital media each have their own benefit
Nielsen
These article expressed one main point of view, which was the techniques of reading versus just scanning. Nielsen explained that in digital media, most readers simply scan information and do not read it word for word. These articles also stressed specific methods individuals subconsciously use while reading hypertext.
Jerz
This article focused on navigation and how it can be used effectively or ineffectively. Location was heavily stressed in this article, noting that the position of each link was key in simple navigation.
Website Notes 10/20/10
- Digital media's advantages are interactivity, non-linearity, immediacy of accessing info, and the convergence of text and images, and audio and video.
- People spend more time reading in digital age.
Nielson
- Back button is 3rd most used feature on the Web.
- First read in horizontal movement on top, go down to only read horizontal once more, and lastly, scan left side vertically downward.
- Fully read only 19% of newsletters.
Jerz
- No "right" way to read a webpage/site.
- Link similar pages together.
- Maybe have multiple navigations, if you have 8+ pages or so.
3 Mortal Sins For Web Design
- Contact info is not available.
- Our headings are capitalized. (some of mine are, not all)
- Haven't check our site using "The Web Page Analyzer."
